Chestnuts and Open Fires

There’s something magical about the quiet hush of winter at Todhunter Vineyards. As the snow blankets the rolling hills and dormant vines, the vineyard transforms into a serene wonderland.

One of our favorite winter traditions is retreating to the warmth of the cabin, where the old stone fireplace stands as a steadfast companion against the chill. The fireplace, with its well-worn stones and comforting crackle, becomes the heart of the cabin during these snowy days. From our comfy chairs, we can look out on the frozen lake and wonder things like, "Is the ice thick enough for us to walk on yet?"

Nestled in front of the fire, we roast chestnuts—a gift from our neighbor's generous tree. The nutty aroma fills the air as the chestnuts’ shells split open, revealing their warm, golden interiors. There’s an unmistakable joy in this ritual, in peeling the hot shells and savoring the sweet, earthy flavor. It’s a moment to share stories, sip on a glass of Todhunter’s favorite vintage, and simply be present.

Outside, up the hill, the vineyard rests beneath its white quilt. The vines, now leafless and with their bark 'hardening' in the cold, stand silhouetted against the soft glow of the snow. Though dormant, they carry the promise of a harvest in 2026, and at least twenty-five harvests after. It’s a stark beauty—one that reminds us of nature’s cycles and the importance of rest before renewal.

This season is a time for reflection and gratitude. As the snow glistens on the branches and the world feels hushed, we find peace in these small, perfect moments. Whether it’s sharing roasted chestnuts, watching the firelight dance on the old log walls, or watching deer poke through the snow in search of anything green, winter at Todhunter Vineyards is truly something to cherish.

We invite you to join us next season when Building 3 on the vineyard is open for guests! We'll have the fire crackling up there, offering warm food, mulled wine, hot apple cider, and more. If you're dressed for it, you can walk the snow-covered trails through our woods and find the icicle-covered waterfall.

Until then, may your days be filled with cozy fires, cherished traditions, and the beauty of the season. Love from your friends at THV!
